What Will You Do When the Door Opens?

When people talk about an opportunity, they are often referring to the metaphorical door that opens in our face when something happens in your life. Usually, you’re fired from your job, you lose someone dear to you, divorced by your spouse, or diagnosed with some horrible disease.

These terrible events in our lives are the catalyst that pushes us to change our ways and motivates us to move in a new direction.

There are other doors of opportunity that open for us every day, and the trick is finding them and walking through them. I’m talking about the many invisible doors.

Extreme Ownership

There is something about being an owner that can give you energy and purpose, and make you more productive than when you aren’t an owner.

When you own something, you are the expert on it. You have knowledge and experience about what works and what doesn’t.

When you are the one deciding what to spend your money on, this creates discipline. It also creates a mindset that says: If I do not succeed with this today, then it means that something else is stopping me from reaching my goals.

Extreme Ownership is about how much control you have over your accomplishments and failures—and this is possible if you have a clear idea of where you want to go and why you should take the specific steps necessary to get there.

The key is to decide how much contribution you want to make to your success—and then work backward from that contribution to create a strategy for getting there.

Owning something is empowering. It means that you make the choice about what happens to the thing.

When something lasts longer than you think it will, that’s when you truly appreciate it. Most of us start out with extreme ownership of something like a favorite hobby or a business. However, as we grow and develop our skills and learn from others, we typically shift toward more moderate or even ownership.

Extreme ownership is for entrepreneurs who want to build something big, or for people who have suffered through an extreme loss and want to rebuild their lives around something they love.

I wanted to share something that I learned from a book that I’m currently reading, and it was a statement in there by Steve Harvey. He explained success in a way that, you know, many of us, we have goals, we have things that we want to accomplish we expect for every single thing that we attempt to do to work out on the first try.

He compared the success journey to riding the bus, and he said that you know, depending on how far your destination is, you have to, you know, get on the bus, first of all, and pay the fare. Sometimes there are multiple transfers that you have to take to reach the goal that it is that you are destined to achieve.

He spoke a lot about learning how to use your gifts, or your strengths, and finding the proper vehicle to allow you to do that.

He said along the way, you may start out going in a specific direction, and you go on as far as you can go with that particular direction, and then you need to catch another transfer, and that direction will take you as far as it can go and then you need to catch another transfer. That direction will take you as far as you can go and you’ll need to catch a level transfer ultimately until you get to your final destination.

That really stood out to me a lot because you know as you pursue whatever, you are determined to be a success in, in your life.

It is a journey.

It does not happen overnight, contrary to what society tries to show you or quick success images and things we see on social media. Sometimes you have no idea where your next opportunity will come from, and sometimes, it’s packaged in the way you least expect it, but it’s the perfect thing for you.
